An advanced massage therapy technique, Neuromuscular Therapy is a manipulation of a specific muscle or muscle groups used to target problem areas. This is a deep tissue massage focusing on points of spasm in muscles causing deep pain, and is the most effective type of massage for lower back pain, and is also very effective in treating headaches, neck pain and jaw pain.
Also called Trigger Point Myotherapy, neuromuscular therapy consists of varying levels of static pressure on specific points to relieve the pain and muscle spasm. The therapist may use knuckles, fingers or elbows. After a while, the pressure should release stored lactic acids from the muscle and create proper oxygen and blood flow, easing the muscle spasm.
Because neuromuscular therapy feels painful at first, there must be open communication between the therapist and recipient in order to adjust the amount of pressure being applied. The therapy session should not be overly painful.
